Group of students, teachers and medical professionals

Last week, students from St. David’s Medical Professions program embarked on a life-changing humanitarian trip to Belize, partnering with Global Brigades, Inc. Over the course of a week, they worked alongside medical professionals to provide care to underserved communities in Trio Village. Students rotated through rural clinic stations—including intake, triage, consultation, and pharmacy—while also conducting home visits and health education sessions. Beyond clinical practice, they gained powerful firsthand insights into the challenges of global healthcare access.

The experience was both humbling and transformative. Students shared stories of connecting across language barriers, being welcomed into homes with generosity, and witnessing the resilience of families facing significant medical hardships. One student reflected on the stark reality of a child with an untreated broken ankle, while another described the inspiration of watching a single healthcare worker serve her entire village with tireless compassion. These encounters deepened students’ gratitude for accessible healthcare at home and strengthened their resolve to pursue careers in medicine with empathy and service at the forefront.

The trip also included opportunities for cultural immersion—exploring Mayan ruins, participating in drumming and dance lessons, and reflecting together on the history and traditions of Belize. The journey concluded with time for snorkeling, beach activities, and heartfelt final reflections with Global Brigades staff. St. David High School is deeply grateful to the sponsors, parents, and community members whose support made this experience possible, and especially to Mrs. Aubri Jacquez for her leadership. This impactful tradition has already left an indelible mark on our students, who return home not only with medical experience, but with broadened hearts and global perspectives.
